After a tooth extraction in DuPont, you may need to slightly alter your daily routine in order to make a speedy and complication-free recovery. That can include switching to a soft diet, taking prescribed pain medications, and even switching up the beverages that you drink. Although you may never have guessed it, drinking your regular morning coffee or other hot beverages can stand in the way of you and feeling better. Read on to learn what drinks you will want to avoid as you are healing from your tooth extraction.
How Long Does It Take to Heal From a Tooth Extraction?
It can take up to two weeks for your mouth to completely heal from a tooth extraction. However, you should be able to return to your daily work and physical routine between 48 and 72 hours after your procedure. Other changes, like what you can drink, may need to last longer. The most important aspect of recovery is to follow your dentist’s aftercare instructions closely to prevent dry socket and other complications from occurring.
When is It Safe to Drink Coffee Again?
One of the most difficult recovery instructions your dentist will give you is to avoid hot beverages, including coffee. This is because the intense temperature can lead to increased post-operative discomfort. It can also dissolve the blood clot forming in the extraction site, which can lead to dry socket. If you experience worsening symptoms, never hesitate to contact your dentist.
If you find your caffeine headaches are getting worse the longer you go without your morning cup of joe, you may be able to drink room temperature coffee following your procedure, or wait for five days after your tooth has been pulled. It’s best to consult with your dentist beforehand—just make sure not to overdo it in the first 24 hours, as rest is imperative to your healing process.
Tips for a Smooth Recovery
After a tooth extraction, the best beverage for you to drink is water, as it can help hydrate you and boost your healing. Be sure to stick to a soft diet for several days following your procedure, or based on your dentist’s instructions. If you experience any swelling or discomfort, you can place a cold compress on the outside of your face for 10 minutes on, 10 minutes off, for up to an hour. If at any point you have concerns about your symptoms, call your dentist immediately.
While hot coffee may be off limits for several days following your treatment, it doesn’t mean you can’t indulge in a nice cold brew or room temperature coffee. Just be sure to check in with your dentist before you do, making sure there’s no risk of complications by doing that. The sweet taste of caffeine paired with a healthy, fully healed smile will be that much more satisfying!
