Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that is colorless. Plaque is constantly forming on your teeth as well as along your gum line. Plaque breaks down into more than the sticky film, it has bacteria in it that can bring along cavities and gum disease. Tartar is plaque that has not been removed from the teeth and gum line that has hardened over time. This calcified plaque will attach itself to the enamel on your teeth and it will also attach itself below your gum line. Getting rid of plaque and tartar are a part of making sure you’re taking care of your teeth and mouth. Another important part is preventing plaque and tartar from even coming up. If you’re able to prevent plaque and tartar you don’t have to get it removed; but how can you effectively prevent plaque and tartar form happening? Here are some great prevention tools that you can do to make sure you don’t have plaque and or tartar on your teeth and gums.

  • Brush your teeth at least twice each day. This is one of the most important things that you can do to ensure you don’t have plaque in your mouth and also to make sure you don’t have tartar building up. You must make sure that you brush for at least two minutes each day and at least twice per day. Doing this will make sure that the plaque is removed from your teeth.
  • Make sure that you floss every day. When you floss you are getting any plaque you may have between your teeth and any plaque there may be underneath your gum line. These are areas that it may be hard for your toothbrush to reach and you don’t want to miss them.
  • Watch the foods that you are eating. To help prevent plaque and tartar from forming on your teeth and gum line you want to make sure you limit the starch and sugar food intake. These types of food and sticky snacks can act like a magnet for plaque and tartar. If you can limit your intake of these things it will lower the plaque and tartar that can try to form.
  • Visit your dentist on a regular basis. You should pay your dentist a visit twice a year. Getting dental examinations and professional cleanings done on a regular basis will help make sure you’re doing things right, and it also lets the dentist take a look and really clean your mouth professionally.

All of these things will help keep plaque in tartar at bay. Do these things on a consistent basis to help ensure you are not allowing plaque and tartar to build up on your teeth and gum line.
