We hear about gingivitis all the time, and how bad it is; but do you know what it is exactly? Gingivitis is the inflammation of the gums (gingiva). This gum disease occurs when a person has poor dental hygiene, which results in red swollen gums that bleed easily when teeth are brushed or flossed.
Gingivitis is a periodontal disease that can progress into periodontitis if left untreated. In extreme cases, teeth can also eventually fall out.
Individuals that have gingivitis typically have red and puffy gums. In mild cases, some people may not even know they have it.
Signs & Symptoms of Gingivitis
* Gums are bright red or purple
* Gums are tender, and sometimes painful to the touch
* Gums bleed easily when brushing teeth or flossing
* Halitosis (bad breath)
* Inflammation (swollen gums)
* Receding gums
* Soft gums
What Causes Gingivitis?
Gingivitis is most commonly caused by the accumulation of bacterial plaque. The plaque appears between and around the teeth, and can eventually lead to destruction of gingival tissue.
If plaque is not removed correctly it can cause tartar near the gums – this is a lot more difficult to remove.
Other Causes From Gingivitis
* Changes in hormones. Gingiva may become more sensitive during puberty, menopause, the menstrual cycle and pregnancy.
* People with cancer, diabetes and HIV are at a higher risk of developing gingivitis.
* Smokers have a higher chance of developing gingivitis.
* Family history – people with a family history of gingivitis have a higher risk of developing it themselves.
How Is Gingivitis Diagnosed?
To properly diagnose gingivitis, individuals must go to a dental professional.
How A Dental Professional Cares
* Plaque and tartar are removed by scaling.
* The dental professional explains to the patient how to properly brush and floss.
* Fixing teeth so patients can properly keep up with their oral hygiene.
